A columbarium is a structure with organized niches whose purpose is to store funeral urns. The name comes from the Latin word “columba”, a dovecote.
Columbaria caves, with small, organized hewn niches in which the ashes of the dead were preserved, have been found in archeological sites in Israel, Egypt, and throughout the Mediterranean Basin.
It is the intention of Aley Shalechet to set up a columbarium in which families can place the ashes of their loved ones.
